The Bridges
The CageThe Bridges is the shopping centre where the search for the missing Briggs twins leads detectives to Rhiannon, a small independent clothes shop. In the investigation, the centre’s everyday retail landscape becomes a source of evidence: a remembered dress and bracelets help direct the police from Linda Briggs’s account to a specific shop and its owner.
Setting and Retail Landscape
The detectives walk through The Bridges after deciding to check the clothes shop associated with the twins’ belongings. The shopping centre is presented as part of a familiar national pattern: chain stores predominate, while independent retailers such as Rhiannon are increasingly uncommon. This contrast gives the shop a distinct identity within an otherwise conventional commercial setting.
Rhiannon is medium-sized and bright, with music playing in the background. Racks of clothes and shoes fill the shop, and a stand displays costume jewellery. When the detectives approach, the owner is unpacking a box and putting out new stock; she stops to watch them.
The Twins’ Shopping Lead
The connection to The Bridges comes from Linda Briggs’s recollection of the twins’ recent purchases. They had each bought a stretchy bracelet and shown the bracelets to her; Berri Briggs had also mentioned a dress she liked. Linda cannot remember the shop’s name, but places it as the little clothes shop next to the bookshop in The Bridges. That imprecise memory is still specific enough to give the police a place to check.
Gary Baxter asks Linda about the shop and then asks to look at the twins’ bedroom for further clues. Later, he and Jane Bowman decide to go into town and check the clothing shop, using the tags they have found as the reason for following up the lead. The centre thus links a family member’s recollection of what the twins liked with the detectives’ examination of physical evidence.
Arrival at Rhiannon
Ten minutes after setting off, Gary and Jane have parked and are walking through The Bridges. Gary identifies the shop as Rhiannon, confirming that the detectives have located the place described by Linda. The scene shifts the inquiry from recollection to direct contact with the retailer: the twins’ possible purchases can now be checked with someone connected to the shop.
Gary presents his warrant card and introduces himself as DI Baxter. The woman identifies herself as Rhiannon Ross, the owner, and asks what she can do for them. The Bridges is therefore more than a backdrop to the search: it is where a fragmentary description becomes a traceable lead and brings the investigation to a named witness.
